    Would you still lose data after the adjustments Ted applied, whereby rename() of A over an existing inode B forces allocation of blocks written to A but not yet allocated?

    I think so; in most cases, the idiom is to rename the original to a “.bak” filename, before renaming in the new version, which avoids the workaround Ted suggests.
