  • why James Gosling left Oracle : 1. made him take an effective pay cut; 2. removed decision authority on Java; 3. he felt Oracle was “ethically challenged”. also: ‘he felt the hand of Larry Ellison in nearly all the decisions affecting Java’; “He’s the kind of person that just gives me the creeps,” he said. “All of the senior people at Sun got screwed compensation-wise. Their job titles may have been the same, but their ability to decide anything was just gone.” he doesn’t pull any punches. oh dear, this is all adding up…

Okay but JM I can’t picture you shedding tears over the future of Java.

I think the issue isn’t about one particular technology so much as it is about the treatment of technologists. Gosling fathered an important technology, and that achievement should garner respect from a company that’s in the technology business; no matter what you think of Java, seeing tech industries defecate all over tech luminaries is an unsettling precedent, IMO.

That, and the implications that Oracle may shortly be rampaging through the software industry wielding Sun’s extensive software patent portfolio.

Having said that, believe it or not, I am actually quite enjoying working in Java these days ;)

Oracle bought Sun so they could sue. They haven’t learned the lessons of SCO. When Oracle was negotiating to buy Sun, they got excited about the patent portfolio and legal loopholes and opportunities to sue people, which Sun never cared about — not about the technology or the people or the goodwill.

Short Oracle stock now and get any and all Oracle products out of your stack. Oracle is half yacht-sponsoring dinosaur, half patent troll, entirely doomed. Fuck Oracle.
