    Sometimes you have to take the whole lane – better to aggravate a motorist than have him push you into the gutter or oncoming traffic. The more cyclists take the whole lane the less it will aggravate motorists. At the moment many motorists assume that a cyclist not riding in the gutter is just being awkward rather than trying to stay safe.

    Yeah, Im with Ryano. I take the lane all the time, when approaching junctions, when stopped at lights, when approaching left turns, passing a row of parked cars on a narrow road. Its the only safe and sensible thing to do as long as you’re moving at a reasonable speed and double check and signal before moving out.

    Taking the lane is sometimes essential for safety, especially in Ireland where the road markings try to get you killed. Quick recommendation: Cyclecraft by John Franklin.
