I fully endorse this approach to the old-fashioned cocktail, which I discovered when Josey Packard worked the first day of The Alembic in San Francisco. She wrote the description (with a wink to Charles Baker) which remains on their menu almost unchanged to this day — I think she would go for orange over lemon:
The oldest cocktail, and still one of the best.
Nothing more than a slug of BOURBON ON THE ROCKS,
WITH A COUPLE OF DASHES OF BITTERS, A LITTLE SUGAR,
and A TWIST OF LEMON PEEL to take the edge off.
Sometimes the simplest things work best.
We make ours without the “garbage” — the fruit
salad with which the noble old warhorse is so
often weighed down.
I still find the Old Fashioned a little too sweet for my taste though, but this is a great recipe. Nice and simple.
