I fully endorse this approach to the old-fashioned cocktail, which I discovered when Josey Packard worked the first day of The Alembic in San Francisco. She wrote the description (with a wink to Charles Baker) which remains on their menu almost unchanged to this day — I think she would go for orange over lemon:

The oldest cocktail, and still one of the best. Nothing more than a slug of BOURBON ON THE ROCKS, WITH A COUPLE OF DASHES OF BITTERS, A LITTLE SUGAR, and A TWIST OF LEMON PEEL to take the edge off. Sometimes the simplest things work best. We make ours without the “garbage” — the fruit salad with which the noble old warhorse is so often weighed down.

I still find the Old Fashioned a little too sweet for my taste though, but this is a great recipe. Nice and simple.
