There are a thousand ways — and because that is so completely Docker-specific, it actually completely fails to capture any of the ways I use containers in development (often using an NFS-rooted filesystem tree on the host, or an rsynced tree from a VM image for high-speed compilation without VM overhead). Of course you don’t need Docker for any of that (I just use mount and uts namespaces and chroots: I’m certainly not bothering with a pid or user namespace, let alone a net namespace, and it’s set up by a couple of 50-line shell scripts) so perhaps it’s not whizzy enough for the new kids on the block. But 50-line shell scripts don’t have massive heaps of dependencies and nightmarish bootstrap problems (how do you build Docker without already having it installed?) so I vastly prefer it if at all possible.

No a shell script and a filesystem subtree does not suffice as a file-distribution format. Good. :)
