Building a Freevo (PVR) box
Being a total geek, I've coveted a Tivo for quite a while. But using a plain old Tivo has several disadvantages:
- it's too expensive, with ongoing monthly charges
- they don't support Ireland, so it'd be useless to me in a year or so
- it seems likely that Tivo will be closing up features (ad skip, etc) to appease the content providers. I couldn't care less about the content providers!
I want other features -- e.g. something I can listen to the BBC RealAudio radio stations with, watching AVIs, etc.
So I went ahead and built a homebuilt PVR with MythTV instead. Here's my notes on this (ongoing) process...
The planning stages: FreevoPlanning
Hardware bought: FreevoHardwareBought
Hardware build log: FreevoHardwareBuildLog
Case build log: FreevoCaseBuildLog
Software setup build log: FreevoSoftwareBuildLog
Software setup final notes: FreevoSoftwareFinal
Pictures: FreevoPics
(BTW, I'm not calling this a "freevo" because it uses the Freevo software; it doesn't, it runs on MythTV. However, when I started the project, that's the name I picked, as it seemed likely I'd be using freevo then -- and it's stuck.)
TODO
nothing much -- it's pretty much done and dusted!
Future options
- add an additional PVR-250 to support encode/decode simultaneously
- add more LEDs!
